EUROSTAT
Retrieve one monthly bilateral goods-trade series from Eurostat Comext: a reporting area, a partner, a product, a trade direction, and a value or quantity measure.
Syntax
series=EUROSTAT(reporter.partner.product.flow.measure.firstMonth.lastMonth)
Enter the seven fields as one dotted argument, without spaces or quoted strings. Month bounds use YYYYMM; both endpoints are included. The first month must precede or equal the last, and the last cannot be in the future.
| Field | Accepted value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
reporter | Eurostat geographic code, such as DE | Country or reporting area whose trade is recorded. |
partner | Eurostat geographic code, such as KZ | Trading partner. Use the Eurostat code, not a numeric Comtrade code. |
product | Exact 2-, 4-, 6-, or 8-digit product code | HS or Combined Nomenclature product level supported by the selected dataset and period. Eight-digit codes are CN codes. |
flow | EXPORT or IMPORT | Exports by the reporter to the partner, or imports by the reporter from the partner. |
measure | VALUE or WEIGHT | VALUE is in euros; WEIGHT is in units of 100 kg. |
firstMonth, lastMonth | YYYYMM | Requested inclusive monthly window. |
Worked example: Germany to Kazakhstan
Plot Germany's reported exports of product 854231 to Kazakhstan from January 2021 through December 2025.
deKz=EUROSTAT(DE.KZ.854231.EXPORT.VALUE.202101.202512)
deKz=SET_NAME(deKz,"Germany exports to Kazakhstan: product 854231")
chart=SET_TITLE(LINE_CHART(deKz),"Monthly exports to Kazakhstan (EUR)")
chart
DE.KZ...EXPORT measures exports reported by Germany to Kazakhstan. It does not measure Kazakhstan's onward exports to another country.Result and availability
- The result is a monthly series with the requested trade values or weights. Each dated point refers to its calendar month.
- The source is Eurostat Comext dataset
DS-045409. The adapter requests the exact product, partner, reporter, flow, measure, and months. - Months without a usable observation remain absent. They are not automatically converted to zero. The adapter also omits observations bearing a Eurostat status flag.
- A downloaded series is cached on the RainbowStats server. The adapter checks for an update after approximately 24 hours; Eurostat can subsequently revise published statistics.
- These requests use Eurostat's public API and require no API key.
Use the series in a trade study
Start by inspecting monthly coverage, product definitions, and the country that reports each flow. For a difference-in-differences design, compare a treated route with a credible control using consistent product codes, direction, units, and reporting practices. Inspect pretreatment trends before interpreting the estimate. A rise in exports to a transit country is a trade pattern, not proof that an individual shipment violated sanctions.
VALUE in EUR; COMTRADE reports VALUE in USD. Likewise, Eurostat WEIGHT is in 100 kg while Comtrade weight is in kg. Align units and investigate reporting differences before comparing levels.Common checks
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
Invalid trade code | Use a Eurostat geographic reporter and partner, an allowed product-code length, and EXPORT/IMPORT with VALUE/WEIGHT. |
| No observations | Verify that the reporter, partner, product and months are available. An absent month is not a measured zero. |
COMTRADE failed: Invalid trade code: DE | The command dispatcher is routing EUROSTAT to COMTRADE; rebuild the module that contains OperatorOperationTool. |
